14:00 SAILPAST

The Annual SailPast is one of Hudson Yacht Club’s most important traditions. The SailPast affords us an opportunity to display the strength and vitality of our Club. It also gives us a chance to pay our respects to the Commodore, and by association, to the many members who contribute to the success of the Club. All owners should ensure that their vessels take part in this review of the fleet. Members and their families are heartily encouraged to participate.

DISPERSAL

After clearing the saluting area, each participant will keep clear of the area until the review is completed and prepare to participate or watch the Halcro Challenge Cup Race.

DRESS

There will be a contest for “Best Dressed Crew” in both sail and power categories. So bring out your friends and relatives dressed to the nines and try to win a bottle of bubbly. It will be served to the winners upon their return to the harbour.

Lake of Two Mountains Championship starts Wednesday

Wednesday June 3 will be the first of 5 races in the reborn Lake of Two Mountains Championships for boats from HYC, CVL, CNDM and CVNO. Historically this has been a very popular series and we are fortunate that, in our centennial year, there is renewed interest in promoting competition between clubs on the whole lake.
The races will be run past Quarry Point off Oka and will also count for the HYC Wednesday series as well as the Club Championships.
As usual, first gun is at 7pm.

“Barging” on the Start line - Don't do it

Barging at the start line is a very poor strategy, it is unprofessional and is totally illegal.

What is “barging”

Barging is approaching the starting line from a point to windward of the lay-line of the starboard or committee boat end of the line.
In the diagram, the blue and red boats are on the layline to the committee boat. The green and yellow boats are windward boats and are required to keep clear.

What is wrong with “barging”

In order to sail through the start line the barging yacht must sail at less than close hauled. Any yachts with an overlap to leeward (i. e. forward of a line projecting to leeward from the transom, hence nearly all the fleet) have right of way and can push the barging boat to windward. This will cause the barging boat have to sail to windward of the windward end of the start line and miss the start. That can be extremely dangerous if there is no barging buoy.

Note the overlapped boat can push the barging boat as high as head to wind, as long as enough room and opportunity is given. The barging boat has to respond immediately.

If you are thinking of barging - don’t

As you will put yourself in an indefensible position. At best, you may find a hole on the second or third row, at worst, you will be pushed to windward of the start-line and miss the start completely.

Spring Regatta Results

Hearty Congratulations to all the winners and all the participants. It could be said that this weekend's regatta was a "BLAST of fresh air" and a good start to HYC's Centennial Year regatta season.

The following were the winners in the various classes this past weekend.

Dinghy Tune-Up Race

Here's a quick reminder that this Thursday is the Dinghy tune-up evening.

The dingy series welcomes both junior and senior sailors, experienced and beginners, and includes a chance to qualify for the club championships. Dust off those Lasers, polish up the Bytes, tune the 420's and rig the Opti's.

Two races to be run. First gun at 7pm.

HYC Fields Two Boats for the J22 Canadians

Two crews from HYC travelled to Toronto last weekend to compete in the J22 Canadians at Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club. Jazz (Ron Harris, John Marten, Pete Amos) and Springbok (Michelle Jutras, Ryan Beck, Bernard le Duc) battled it out in a tight fleet which included two Olympic crews.


Conditions were light but the race committee managed to run a full slate of 7 races over the two days. With the wind oscillating 30 degrees, there was a premium on tacking on the shifts and riding the puffs - not unlike sailing on the Lake of Two Mountains! A "Dark & Stormy" Saturday evening inspired Springbok to grab a bullet on Sunday morning.


A great time was had by all.

HYC Spring Regatta May 29-31, 2009

With the first races completed we are now looking forward to the Spring Regatta to be held at the end on May. With 6 races scheduled over the 2 days and including 3 races from the Saturday A series, there is plenty of action.

Are you in the right dock?

The harbour is starting to fill in and after a long winter, what a lovely sight!
Please be sure to check the 2009 Harbour Plan to ensure that you are in your allocated berth. We are glad to welcome some new boats to the fleet this year. This has meant some adjustment to the dock allocation.

Racing Begins this Week!

Boats to the water! Racing begins this week with the A-series for white sail race on Tuesday and spinnakers Wednesday. There are already enough boats launched and others circling the crane for there to be an official race.
Not in the water yet, well there are still launch slots available, so call the office and to get your boat into the harbour.
See you on the water. First gun at 7pm.

Junior Sailing Programs Starting to Fill Up!

School is ALMOST out - and there is no better way for your kids (or grandkids!) to spend the summer than out on the lake, learning the skills and thrills of sailing!! Under the guidance of knowledgeable and fun-loving instructors, the Junior Sailing Program offers exciting courses for the novice, intermediate and advanced junior sailor.

Opti Learn to Sail teaches single-handed sailing on the world's most reknowned dinghy. And this year we offer the next step in Optimist sailing with our Opti Learn to Rock 'n' Race, which gives the Opti sailor a taste for competition (and to strive for the Opti Race Team!) Our popular White Sail and Bronze sessions are four weeks of quality instruction, covering basic to advanced sailing techniques through CYA-based certification. Or if your young sailor wants to try a one-week session, just to get their feet wet, then Sailing is Fun fits the bill!

Launching Delayed

Regrettably, due to the high water level, the HarbourMaster has decided that launching will only start on Monday, May 18th.

As you can see from the photo taken this evening the "L" Pier still remains partially submerged. Thus, it provides no protection to the docks within the harbour.

Margaret will send an email out to everyone who has scheduled a date advising owners of the delay and asking them to contact us in the office to confirm their NEW DAY & TIME. Please give her a call.

I know many of you are all ready to go, but we will have to be patient a little longer.

How to Do I Get Involved in Sailing at HYC?

For many of us sailing is a passion that has grown over a number of years. This often means that we have varied levels of skill and experience or different individual goals. To help us all participate we have many programs at HYC to get you on the water.

Crew Bank:

If you have a boat & need crew or want to crew and need a boat (or have it all but don't know what to do with it!), send an email to crew@hudsonyachtclub.com and we will try to get you out on the water. Please provide your contact information and experience so we can match you appropriately.

The bench near Hy-Seas will be the official Crew Bench. Anyone wanting to crew can present themselves at that bench before a race and we will do our best to get you on a boat.

Stay informed & spread the word - get your name on the sailors' advisory emails and check the notice boards for updates and crewing opportunities.

Learn-To-Sail Program:

HYC offers a great Learn-To-Sail program for adults. Designed to introduce the novice or the individual with limited experience to the sport of sailing. The course should provide the participant with the confidence and skill to sail in a variety of wind conditions and with the basic knowledge of racing skills. Call the office or check out the Club Website for more information.

Clinics:

Aug 1-2 - Racing Clinic
Building on the experience gained over the previous clinics, we will focus this year on Racing Skills and Spinnakers. Clinics are open to men & women with some experience. Volunteering to assist in coaching, providing boats and sharing your experience, are also great opportunities to participate in these clinics.

Women's Racing:

With a growing number of Women’s events the camaraderie of this fleet is certainly unmistakable. This year there will be fully owned and operated women’s boat at HYC and several Regattas on the Lake.
