HYC holds and wins CYA Womens Keelboat Nationals

After a long and sometimes rocky road, the Womens Keelboat National Championship Regatta finally came to pass. In the end we had ten J22s competing, from four provinces. The kick off was on Friday with a full day of on land and on water coaching ably handled by Geoff Moore of North Sails/North U, and Ron Harris, John Marten, and Pete Amos all three of HYC.
The girls spent Friday afternoon practicing starts, mark rounding, and general boat handling in winds of fifteen to seventeen knots. Friday evening all competitors were invited to stay at the club and enjoy a great meal at the weekly HYC Carvery.
Sunday proved to be a very light wind day and the competitors were kept on shore until noon, when the wind finally filled, and the race committee got one more race in before the deadline of two o'clock.
Results are as follows:
1st Nicole Bastet of HYC
2nd Marg Hurley of Nepean Sailing Club
3rd Melodie Gummer of Kingston
4th Gillian Thompson of Kelowna
5th Karen Albert of Toronto
6th Erin Harris of HYC
7th Karen Fowler of Bedford Basin
8th Marian Kuiper of HYC
9th Toni Hobbs of Toronto
10th Cathy Bredt of HYC
At the end of a busy and fun filled weekend, it was agreed that next years WKNC would go to Victoria BC, so ladies start now and plan plan on competing. For lots of pictures of the sailing action go to http://www.maysstudio.com/store/gallery.php?gid=388

Women’s Racing On Lake Of Two Mountains
HYC hosted its second annual Women’s Regatta, with six keen crews, including a visiting boat from CVMO, Apsara. Thanks to the dogged perseverance of our Race Committee and Bosun, who searched up and down the lake for wind, we got in two races. And the grey skies couldn’t dampen the great time had by all, both on and off the water! After slow motion racing, the girls repaired to the bar and enjoyed complimentary Sleeman beer and a very tasty potluck buffet! Regatta winners were The PeaceMaker (Marian, Erin, Lise and Lauren), TinkerBell (Cathy H, Melissa, Carol) and Springbok (Femke, Debby, Brenda and Nancy.) And congrats to first-time boats Kevelle (Liz L, Steph D, Jan B) and Freja (Gail, Sheena, Debbie N)!! And there were some rumblings about an illegal sailor on Freja…??
Two weeks later, a bevy of keen Hudson women sailors headed over to CVMO for their annual Régate des Femmes. After an interesting bumper-boats start (the wind dropped completely), the fleet of seven took off… sort of. But with gradually increasing winds (I use the term lightly) and sunnier skies, the race got interesting – but there was still no catching Tumbleweed, the clear winner of day. Congratulations to the first place team, Tumbleweed (Cathy B, Debby, Carol) – and also for your enthusiastic docking! ;-) Under the steady helm of Barb (with Bev L, Helen Henshaw), Beluga placed fourth, with Verboaten (Marian, Erin, Lise, Lauren), in her inaugural race, right behind in fifth place. This regatta had a special purpose this year, as a fund-raiser for breast cancer, so the theme of the day was PINK! Competitors and friends sipped rosé and enjoyed delicious local OKA cheese.
The organizing committees from both clubs would like to thank all participants and volunteers for making both events a wonderful success! See you next year!!

HYC Competes in Buffalo J22 Eastern Great Lakes Championship
Last weekend, the three “little rockets” drove in convoy to compete in the fourth annual Buffalo J22 Raw Bar Regatta.
With 43 entries, featuring the rock stars of the J22 North American circuit, it was the first major one-design regatta for Tinker Bell (Cathy Harris, Jenny Marten, Jessa Amos, Femke) and turned out to be a veritable trial by fire. Eight races were sailed over 2 days in winds of 15-25 knots and waves of up to 8 feet – conditions we don’t often practice in on the Lake of Two Mountains.

We had great support and encouragement from the company of our dear friends and husbands on Jazz (Ron Harris, John Marten, Pete Amos) and Springbok (Michelle Jutras, Ryan Beck, Bernard le Duc). From time to time we sailed close to them, but mostly we got to admire their transoms and awesome spinnaker flying. Both teams performed impressively with Springbok placing 26th and Jazz 13th. Jazz would have done even better, except for an OCS in the last race which they didn’t hear as their radio was not working.
It was tough and we got bruised, I went over-board but my crew stayed calm and pulled me back in. I’m very proud of our team and the way we handled the multiple challenges. We had some moments of brilliance too – surfing down the rollers and beating Jazz off the start line (Yeah!). We stayed out there, placed 35th, came together as a team, had loads of fun and won the party. Definitely an experience to be recommended and repeated.

How to Do I Get Involved in Sailing at HYC?
If you have a boat & need crew or want to crew and need a boat (or have it all but don't know what to do with it!), send an email to crew@hudsonyachtclub.com and we will try to get you out on the water. Please provide your contact information and experience so we can match you appropriately.
The bench near Hy-Seas will be the official Crew Bench. Anyone wanting to crew can present themselves at that bench before a race and we will do our best to get you on a boat.
Stay informed & spread the word - get your name on the sailors' advisory emails and check the notice boards for updates and crewing opportunities.
Learn-To-Sail Program:HYC offers a great Learn-To-Sail program for adults. Designed to introduce the novice or the individual with limited experience to the sport of sailing. The course should provide the participant with the confidence and skill to sail in a variety of wind conditions and with the basic knowledge of racing skills. Call the office or check out the Club Website for more information.
